6 Easy, Healthy Summer Habits

06.01.2023

Summer has everyone switching gears. Less work, more play. Less scheduling, more free-spiriting. But that doesn’t mean your workout routine should become an afterthought. In fact, it’s even easier to stay active in the summertime and start a few healthy new habits. Here are some must-do's.

  1. Take a Meditation Walk. Sitting still to meditate isn’t for everyone. So why not try it while walking? You’ll get some steps in and move toward mental clarity at the same time. Find a safe space outside where you can walk freely, tune out background noise and enjoy nature. As you walk, pay attention to how your legs feel and be aware of any other sensations your body is experiencing. Be mindful of the present moment, nothing more. Doing this for 10-15 minutes a day may help you gain a bit of extra focus and give you fuel for the day.

  2. Try an Apple a Day. Apples are packed with fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. And you can jazz them up to get even more nutritional benefits. Drizzle a few slices with lemon juice, which helps regulate blood sugar and aids in digestion. Spread on some almond or peanut butter for a protein boost. Chop them up and sprinkle into  Greek yogurt. Or, for something more filling, lay a few slices on a grilled cheese sandwich.

  3. Work Out While Traveling. Going on vacation or being on the road doesn’t mean you have to put the brakes on hitting the gym or studio. With FitReserve, you have access to classes in major cities across the country — check the app or website to see what might be happening in the part of the country you’re traveling to, and book in advance. Your spot will be reserved and waiting!

  4. Rise Early to Something New. Take advantage of the extra sunlight and get up early. You’ll have instant motivation if you try a new fitness class. Take summer as a chance to step outside your comfort zone and switch things up: If you’ve been cross-training, try a morning yoga flow for balance. If you’ve been hooked on Pilates, work in a little barre to elongate your muscles in different ways. Schedule your workouts a week out by booking on FitReserve and you’ll always have something new to look forward to.

  5. Sneak in Extra Stretching. While it’s not “working out,” stretching does a world of good. And it’s often something we forget to do. Take a break in your day — whether you’re on the computer, in between errands, or just hanging out at home — and do some hamstring or quad stretches. Foam rollers help if you’re feeling tight. Take it slow, breathe deeply and enjoy a moment of rest.

  6. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate. Hydration is key, especially when you’re active and it’s hot outside. Did you know that the recommended amount of daily water intake is 11.5 cups for women and 15.5 cups for men? That’s almost 3 and 4 liters, respectively, so make it a goal and keep those water bottles handy.

When you add a few healthy habits to your routine, even small ones, it all adds up. Don’t let your activity go on hiatus until fall. Stay focused on good nutrition and movement and you’ll have just the energy boost that summer called for.
