Class Overview

–Yin Yoga and Therapeutics are the counterbalance to stronger Vinyasa Practices. The Yoga Sutras tell us very clearly that the equilibrium in the asana spectrum comes from the dynamic interplay of shtira (established clarity and focus) and sukha (the good space that allows for integration, expansion, and growth). However, if the Practices in your Sadhana are too strong, this interplay is disturbed and we are pushed out of harmony. The fiery pitta and rajasic vata qualities are heightened, and we must employ the more lunar, nurturing krama to ground us back into a sattvic balance. Our lives are plagued with physical and physiological fatigue, suppressed immune function, digestive and cardiovascular disorders, and damaged eating patterns. Relaxation can literally reduce or eliminate the risk of heart disease, strengthen the immune system and its response, reduce muscular tensions, decrease hypertension, dim anxiety and panic attacks, increase concentration, deepen sleep, equalise emotional upheaval, and diminish headache and body pain. The revolutionary Restorative process starts with organic and introspective movement, to bring awareness to the current state of the physical presence – and also warm the synovial spaces before long-held asana. Then students continue in a series of four to five supported postures, enveloped in blankets, bolsters, and essential oils, to allow an effortless sinking into experience. Conscious use of pranayama, kriya, nada, mantra, and meditation is employed throughout the class to facilitate a deeper magnetising of the consciousness – allowing the cerebral hemispheres to relax and the parasympathetic nervous system to encourage rest and speed recovery. Energy work and touch therapy are added, if students desire. The senses are softened, the muscles are rejuvenated, and the body is fed on a deeper level. It’s Yoga Nap-time at its best. One student once remarked, “it’s like a hug from Shiva, while curled up watching Netflix with Lakshmi. It just makes your week better.” This class is accessible and transforming for All Levels. Beginners and Injured students are welcomed and encouraged.

Urban Sadhu Yoga™ is a method of applying ancient yogic wisdom in a contemporary context. The Urban Sadhu Yoga™ Method is a modern, integrated Yoga method that incorporates many unique aspects of a traditional Yoga sadhana (practice) for the contemporary urban spiritual seeker. The method draws from the ancient yogic wisdom of India – Raja Yoga, Tantra Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Karma Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Nada Yoga, Jappa Yoga, and Bhakti Yoga – but does not exclude spiritual teachings from other cultures. Spiritual activism is a key component within the Urban Sadhu Method.
