ABOUT THE BRADFORD METHOD

What is the Bradford Method?

The Bradford Method is a dynamic workout that blends elements of Pilates, yoga, core and ballet strengthening techniques, designed to create a sculpted and limber physique. Clients can expect a positive and personalized approach to fitness, and are instructed through unique routines using some of the most cutting-edge exercise equipment. Our new Bradford Method studio in East Hampton opened this summer, and we also have a teaching space on the Upper West Side in Manhattan.

The inspiration behind the Bradford Method?

Through my fitness background and my 15 years of experience as a trainer, I found that exercise lacked the movement qualities that are so inherent in dance: range of motion, musicality and grace. These are the qualities that help make the dancer’s body defined yet supple, so I started giving my clients movement sequences that were more dynamic and their bodies (and souls) started to respond.

What makes it unique and such an effective workout?

In my method, I utilize the cutting-edge Garuda apparatus, a 12-foot by 8-foot next generation Pilates machine, to create strong, defined, balanced musculature using spring resistance and body weight. I also incorporate a weight and pulley system called an A-Frame, which I use to open up tight areas of the body and increase flexibility. For cardiovascular endurance and weight loss my clients tone and dance on the mini-trampolines. I also customize the routines for each individual client to meet their specific needs and focus on their strengths. Everyone’s bodies are different so I believe that exercises should be tailored to the individual for maximum performance and results.

Shonda Fitness Advice: "Keep an open mind. When you're learning new ways to move your body it can be slightly uncomfortable. When you come to your session with an open mind, you allow your teacher and your body to take you places you never imagined. My clients are always surprised by how they rise to meet new challenges I give them and since I mix things up every 2 weeks, you have to show up with a good attitude, ready to work and have fun!"

  • I love yoga and exercise classes. Your studio looks so wondering. I have just started exercise. I have gone to 5 classes now. I agree it isn't for everyone but I actually enjoy it. I will definitely share this to my friend.
