- By Caroline Callahan Janson

Anyone who walks out of this sun-lit studio will be tapping emphatic text messages to friends in Greenwich Village: “Have you been to Core Pilates NYC yet? You have got to check it out!” The studio, in this case, is actually two studios: one on the ninth floor, with a gorgeous arched window that lends an airy feel to the space, and a second, smaller space on the second floor, home to mat-based classes that will help you lengthen, strengthen and tone your body.

Both spaces offer inspired classes for Pilates veterans and newbies alike—the kind that may make you bid your gym membership adieu. Since its opening in 2002, Core Pilates has indeed become one of the top studios in Manhattan, beloved by celebs like Anne Hathaway and featured in glossies like US Weekly, Marie Claire, Self, and Pilates Style.

Owners: Michelle Fama and Kim Villanueva

Classes Offered: Pilates, PilatesBarre, Tower, Reformer, Mat, Reformer, Springboard, JumpBoard, Teacher Certification

Why You Should Check It Out: Other than the vibe of the studio and the excellence of its instructors? Fans of Pilates swear by its capacity to increase flexibility, improve posture, build strength, promote weight loss by building long, lean muscle.

Advice For first-timers: The check-in desk is on the ninth floor; mat class is on the second. Elevators are a little slow so plan accordingly!

Amenities: Cubbies, lockers and a multi-talented set of instructors!

Meeting friends after class? Check out Nanoosh on University for delectable hummus, tabbouleh, salads and soups; Spice Thai on 13th Street; and Argo Tea for tea on University.
